Bikes Not Bombs offers eco-friendly solution

Bikes Not BombsIn their latest endeavor, the Boston-based Bikes Not Bombs is supplying bicycles for more than 400 rural village health workers in Northern Uganda.

With a recycled mountain bicycle, these health workers can travel to patients' homes more quickly. This affordable, reliable form of transportation also comes with free training in bicycle mechanics for the workers and the establishment of the necessary infrastructure to make sure that these bikes keep rolling out on calls for as long as they are needed.

The donated used bicycles are collected in the United States by Bikes Not Bombs and shipped to Uganda for distribution to health workers trained by St. Mary's Lacor Hospital.

Bikes Not Bombs has sent over 40,000 bikes to communities in the United States, Central America, the Caribbean and Africa in the last 25 years. Their programs help recycle thousands of bicycles while helping others around the world. In Massachuetts, their vocational training center provides young adults with opportunities to "earn-a-bike" by rebuilding one or, if they wish, training to become a bicycle mechanic.

GreaterGood.org supports Bikes Not Bombs through the Gifts That Give More program.  To learn more about their current efforts to help health workers in Uganda better serve their patients, please click here.
