Donations from GreaterGood.org helped Foundation for the People of Burma assist villagers following the March 24 earthquake there. The 6.8 magnitude earthquake's epicenter occurred east of the Shan State in Burma (Myanmar). Conflicting news reports out of Burma put the death toll between 75 and over 150, but all acknowledged that the earthquake and its aftershocks did considerable property damage.
The Foundation worked together with local partners to purchase plastic sheeting and instant noodles for six villages impacted by the earthquake. Nearly all of the villagers suffered damage to their houses and many refused to sleep inside because of fear of aftershocks and further collapse.
With the early spring weather both rainy and cold, an urgent need for shelter was identified as a critical need in the area.
Supplies were distributed between April 7 and 9. Heavy fighting between the Burma army and an ethnic ceasefire group in one area at the time of the distribution made access difficult, but supplies reached the villagers with the help of local headmen, religious leaders, and others.
GreaterGood.org assistance was made possible through the Gifts That Give [tm] program.
