Hunger still exists in America

At the end of January, the United Nations Ambassodor Against Hunger Howard G. Buffett joined Feeding America President and CEO Vicki Escarra in responding to a Wall Street Journal article entitled The Myth of the Starving Americans.

In their letter, they noted that the original writer, Warren Kozak, "cherry picked" his facts "in an attempt to prove allegations that are inaccurate and mean-spirited" about a lack of need for federally supported food programs. In fact, argue Buffet and Escarra, the facts show just the opposite: that these programs remain a vital and important part of fight against hunger in the United States.

At the end of the letter, Buffett and Escarra concluded: "Feeding America provides food and groceries to more than 5.7 million Americans each and every week. The staff and volunteers of our food banks and the food pantries, soup kitchens and emergency feeding centers they serve are literally in the trenches, face to face every day with Americans who come to us when their food stamps are exhausted and their cupboards are bare."

They concluded with an invitation to the writer of the original article "to come to one of our facilities and learn firsthand the facts about hunger in America."

GreaterGood.org supports Feeding America's nationwide network of food banks through the "Click Here To Give" program at The Hunger Site and Gifts That Give More [tm].
