This bill was enrolled into law, but then vetoed by the Governor. We still need support! Please continue signing!
Goal: 60,000 Progress: 46,833
Sponsored by: The Veterans Site

Losing a loved one is one of the worst experiences a person can imagine. The wake of a death is a time for family and friends to grieve and mourn the recent loss.

However, some insensitive groups don't think so. For example, the Westboro Baptist Church routinely pickets the funerals of members and supporters of the gay community.

Although the First Amendment protects the right to free speech — as Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito claims, "Our profound national commitment to free and open debate is not a license for vicious verbal assault..." We cannot condone hateful acts simply to uphold a statue that, in some cases, the existence of which could cause extreme grief for an individual. Taking away free speech isn't the goal; it's simply to protect already grief-stricken families from further unnecessary suffering.

We should work to be a nation of peace, not cruel savagery. Sign the petition in favor of SB 888 now.

Dear Senator Ted Lieu,

I applaud you on your efforts to ban picketing at funerals. SB 888 would make it a crime to picket a funeral that's being held on public property.

For some time now, certain religious and interest groups have been routinely staging protests at funerals, many of which have been for former members or supporters of the gay community. They use the funerals as their soapboxes to spread their extreme beliefs. They shout hurtful comments and carry signs with offensive slurs. This causes even further distress to already grieving families.

Please see that SB 888 is passed so families can grieve in peace.
