President Trump instituted an across-the-board hiring freeze on federal jobs except for national security and military positions in an effort to curb federal spending and the size of government. But an unintended consequence of this action is harming our young veterans who need jobs and need them now. We need to make veterans exempt from the federal hiring freeze!
A group of 22 Democrats in Congress, led by Rep. Stephen Lynch, D-Mass., are trying to do exactly that. Lynch has put forward a bill that would let federal agencies to fill vacant positions with veterans.
According to Lynch, "President Trump's federal hiring freeze not only hurts everyday Americans seeking a prompt response from a federal agency, but also makes it difficult for veterans looking for employment in the federal government across the country. Veterans have earned their hiring preference and I am deeply concerned that the federal hiring freeze will disproportionately hurt America's veterans."
The most recent numbers available show that the veteran unemployment rate is going up. According to CNBC, the unemployment rate for young veterans has sharply increased from 6.3 percent in January from 4.4 percent in September. At the same time, veterans make up one third of all federal employees. Thus, the federal hiring freeze is keeping veterans from getting jobs when they are needed more than ever.
With exceptions already being made to the hiring freeze for military personnel and national security positions, our nation's veterans should be included in the exception to the hiring freeze as well. These brave men and women, who have spent years serving and defending our country, should not face a roadblock when re-entering civilian life.
Keeping veterans from starting work in federal government jobs will only further increase the unemployment rate among young veterans, a group uniquely qualified for these jobs who possess qualities of hard work, dedication, discipline, and love of our country.
The federal hiring freeze may or may not have some positive effects, but what needs to come first is taking care of our veterans. They did their duty, and now that they are in civilian life let's help them find work and lower the veteran unemployment rate!

Our nation's veterans, the proud men and women who served our country in the highest manner, deserve nothing but the very best we can give them. They deserve, and have earned through blood and sweat, our respect, our admiration, and our gratitude. Unfortunately, far too many of them enter civilian life also needing our help, and we must be ready and prepared to assist them wherever needed.
From providing prompt and adequate care for physical and mental medical needs, to combating homelessness and assisting in suicide prevention, the care for our veterans must be a top priority for the nation and the government. Included in that is also the need to provide assistance for transition into civilian life and helping veterans find jobs after the military.
The current unemployment rate among America's veterans is unacceptably high higher than the national unemployment rate especially when it comes to young veterans. The latest figures put the young veterans' unemployment rate at 6.3 percent in January, up sharply from 4.4 percent in September, 2016. Every possible door must be opened, every obstacle removed, and every avenue explored to make it possible for these brave men and women to find jobs. Everything possible must be done to see that unemployment number go down and get our veterans back to work.
The federal hiring freeze implemented at the beginning of the year is standing in the way of veterans seeking work, and they must be made exempt from the hiring freeze. Rep. Stephen Lynch and fellow members of Congress have introduced a bill that would allow federal agencies to continue hiring veterans, and I urge you to support this idea and move quickly in making an exception to the hiring freeze for veterans.
According to the Office of Personnel Management, veterans comprise nearly a third of federal employees. With their specialized training and experience, along with natural values of hard work, dedication, and discipline, veterans are uniquely qualified for government jobs. Taking as an example the Department of Veterans Affairs, veterans have an unequalled insight into the needs and challenges of fellow veterans; and with such federal departments currently understaffed, it only makes logical sense to fill the vacant positions with our country's veterans.
Given the fact that nearly a third of federal employees hired are veterans, the current federal hiring freeze is disproportionately harming veterans something which should never be allowed to happen in the United States of America.
